Conscious Leadership, a Herd of Horses and 3 Brains

Post by on

What does three days spent with a herd of horses and conscious leadership have in common? A lot as it turns out! For some people, spending three days with a herd of horses would be a sublime way to spend their time. For others it might be close to terrifying. However, this is what I have just done in order to understand how horses help us become better leaders. For clarity, I have worked with horses before in terms of personal development, but this specific programme demonstrated to me the importance of bringing our full capacity to leadership. The programme was entitled The Zone of Intuitive Knowing – but I renamed it ‘Everything you need […]

Seven Secrets of Authenticity

Post by on

Stuart Haden (Excerpt from Can you be coached to authentic greatness?) As we increasingly place greater emphasis on personal values many people choose to develop as authentic leaders. An authentic leader is aware of their identity and skilfully exhibits these values in the workplace… If you want to develop authenticity with the support and challenge of a coach then consider the following Seven Secrets of Authenticity: IDENTITY – aligning yourself. In order to be authentic we have to raise our self-awareness and understand who we really are. We need to be mindful that the external environment is important, but ensure we also focus on our inner world. INNER – skillfully expressing yourself. It is one […]

Spiral Dynamics: Theory you can use

Post by on

Post by Jon Freeman  spiralfutures.com Native American wisdom teacher Sun Bear once said “I am not interested in a philosophy if it doesn’t help me grow corn”.  Theories are much the same. Their usefulness depends essentially on three things: Do they explain what we can see? Do they correctly predict what will happen next? Do they provide useful information that helps us change outcomes? In 1974 Professor Clare W. Graves described the conditions that would face mankind in the future. He said that these conditions would demand a “momentous leap” in human capacities. Forty years on we are now living in exactly the life conditions he predicted. This prediction was based on decades of research […]

How Frederic Laloux’s ‘Reinventing Organizations’ points the way towards more Conscious Leadership

Post by on

Reinventing Organizations is a great read, a breath of fresh air (and sometimes a mindbend) about how the new and emerging forms of organisations go about their business. It serves not only as a compelling story, but also alters our paradigm as we read it. That is some effect. There are several clues within it that point to who the leaders of these (Teal) kinds of organisations need to be, which hints at an evolved form of leadership. Frederic describes three principles around which their operations cluster: Self management Frederic’s point: Hierarchies don’t work in complex organisations because all the complexity is pushed to the top awaiting decisions. As we know from other writers (e.g. […]

What’s going on in the Conscious Leadership field?

Conscious Leadership: A Glimpse at Fall/Spring 2014 (updated 7 October 2014) Europe Natural Leaders NOW London, 22-23 November 2014 The root word of ‘leadership’ is ‘leith’ which means to cross the threshold, to let go of old ways, mind-sets and logic in order to embrace the new. Leadership is, first and foremost, an attitude to life. A unique and empowering blend of conference and interactive workshops led by inspiring international speakers and teachers (including Mac Macartney, Scilla Elworthy, Jamie Catto). “I am certain that a different future for all of humanity is possible, if humans wake up. Waking up starts with you and me. It means increasing our knowledge of ourselves, using reflection, mindfulness and […]

Tales of Conscious Leadership

Post by on

Facts, figures, budgets, outcomes…so far, so normal in the business meetings and leadership training sessions I typically sit in on.  Heads are full of data, obstacles and concrete mountains to climb, speedily, in the quest for running companies successfully in an ever more competitive and ‘squeezed’ environment.  Bodies become, as Pete Hamill of Embodied Leadership writes, simply vehicles to move our brains around from one meeting to the next. And yet today something different happened.  And it happens every time I address a group and start to talk about the possibilities of being more human as a leader.  Human connections, authenticity, bringing your heart and values to your leadership of others so that they can […]
