Conscious Living Network: Self Inquiry #RSAinLondon

Post by on

The next Conscious Living Network topic is ‘Self Inquiry’ One of the key purposes of the Conscious Living Network is to grow in our ability to be more ‘response-able’ in any given moment including, most importantly, the present moment, the only one we ever have. Some moments are more difficult than others, and it is through self-awareness that we are able to manage the moment with more ease, grace and choice. Life gives us enough to worry about in a day, and it is often through our own patterns of behaviours that we experience the most frustration and suffering, despite our best efforts. Self-inquiry is a useful way to explore aspects of ourselves that we […]

Solving the Productivity Puzzle

Post by on

Mind the Maintenance Gap – Solving the Productivity Puzzle Doug Crawford The productivity of organisations in the UK has for long been a cause for real concern as productivity levels have consistently remained below the average of G7 advanced economies (the gap now stands at 17%, the largest since 1992- according to Office for National Statistics, February 2015). Many reasons have been given for this, solutions postulated and blame apportioned, especially by political leaders, but one aspect that does not appear to have been given serious consideration is the prevailing mindset through which the productivity debate is being conducted. Let us travel back in time for a moment to the ‘industrial era’ where wealth was […]

#wtf do millennials really want?

Post by on

Millennials, the upcoming generation of leaders (currently aged between approximately 20-35 years) who senior managers are somewhat anxious about. Frustrations include: “how to engage, motivate and retain them?”, “how can these youngsters expect to come to work and sit on Facebook?”, “they have an air of entitlement and feel the rules shouldn’t apply to them” I would like frame this age group not as a new species of strange beasts, but rather as the by-product of where we are at today. As time and evolution would have it, today’s 30 year olds are not going about the art of life in the same way that 30 year olds were 30 years ago. The common ground […]

John Mackey on Conscious Leadership: The Hero’s Journey

Post by on

I recently attended the Success 3.0 Summit in Boulder, CO, where I had the pleasure of hearing John Mackey (co-CEO of Whole Foods Market and co-founder of Conscious Capitalism) speak specifically about his views on conscious leadership. What I enjoyed most about John’s keynote was that he took a balanced, pragmatic and business-like view of conscious leadership. Not for John an airy-fairy, loved-up view of being a conscious leader: in fact, he made a point of addressing the audience (some of whom were, in my view, in some danger of veering towards taking an airy-fairy and loved-up view of conscious leadership) by starting his speech with a warning that conscious leadership requires work, discipline and […]

Are schools inspiring the Conscious Leaders of tomorrow?

Post by on

Last week I was at my son’s school for a prize- giving event and was taken by something the Headmaster Mr Knibbs said during his welcome speech to the parents and student. He talked about a focus ‘beyond academic results’ and about the importance of creating a sense of balance and wellbeing in the school. This, Mr Knibbs said, ‘would lead to the right results for each boy and for Hampton school as a whole’. He went on to talk about the importance of creating balance – helping the boys develop inner confidence, strength of character and a healthy relationship with competition. He talked about humility, resilience and the boys being mindful of their actions whilst […]
